Context-Aware Intelligent Environments

In video, we present the AwareKitchen research project. The setting for this project is a kitchen environment. Kitchens are an important part of everyday life. People spend a significant amount of time in them and do a wide spectrum of activities like preparing and eating meals, cleaning, and many social interactions in the families. The kitchen is in many households an important place for meeting and exchanging all kinds of information. We present a sensor-augmented, intelligent environment that is capable of detecting a wide range of activities in a kitchen. A great variety of sensing systems (e.g. sensor nodes or laser scanners) are connected to one single middleware. The Player/Stage/Gazebo middleware has been extended to support common pervasive computing technologies, such as Particle Computers or Motes, as well as many custom-made sensing systems.
